Are Stay-at-Home Moms Wasting Their College Degrees?

As you can imagine, the shee-yit hit the fan when a trouble maker on MSN’s message boards posed the question: “Have stay-at-home moms with expensive bachelor’s degrees wasted the money?”
I’m not gonna lie: Since having Skylar four months ago, my brain has become even mushier than Jack Nicholson’s naked ass in “Something’s Gotta Give.” But am I sorry that I invested in a bachelor’s and a master’s degree…? Of course not.
Where ELSE would I have learned the proper keg-stand technique? Geesh.
In all seriousness, many mothers, I’m sure, would argue they’ve benefited from being educated, from being able to pass that knowledge on to their kids, and having a strong foundation when… if… they choose to re-enter the work force.
I believe a better question is, “Have companies wasted great talent by not offering better work-life solutions for mothers?”
I also don’t understand why the trouble maker targeted stay-at-home mamas when MANY people have wasted money on expensive degrees. I mean, thank GOODNESS I got my Political Science degree so I could become a writer for “The Bold and the Beautiful” and then a smart-ass blogger! *Ahem*

I remember a very spirited “discussion” about this topic on my sorority’s email list. (Yes, I’m a sorority girl.) Some of the undergrads were saying that it’s a shame how so many of us alums have “wasted” our MIT degrees by deciding to be SAHMs. Hmm. That went over really well, as I’m sure you can imagine. Even though we may be wasting our brains, we can still type. While banging the keyboard loudly.
You’ve already made the most relevant points. I just wanted to add that I can’t imagine a more important “job” than raising the next generation of humans. And if I haven’t done a good enough job of building my professional expertise to allow for a few years off, then I haven’t used my degree very well at all.
A work colleague of mine made a good point when I was debating whether or not to leave my job. She said, “You’ve spent your entire life doing all the right things in order to establish yourself and build a strong foundation. Why? It’s so you can do things like take time off when you want or need to. Why bother building the foundation if you don’t use it?” THAT’S why I have the degrees/education/experience I have. To give myself the freedom to make the choices I want to make.
