And The Most Popular Baby Names of 2009 Are…

Come on down, Madison and Matthew! You –
Whoa. Um, there sure are a lot of you. On second thought, don’t all come down at once, please.
As I was saying… Madison and Matthew topped the most popular American names in 2009. Matthew is a classic, of course, while Madison has risen in popularity over the past decade.
Mr. Candy and I always imagined we’d name our daughter Madison until, well, we actually got pregnant and went to my seven-year-old cousin’s softball game where the pitcher, the catcher, the second basewoman and two-thirds of the outfield were named Madison. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But sure makes for an interesting game of softball. As if seven-year-old softball players aren’t confused enough.
“Get the BALL, Madison! The BALL! The ball sitting on your feet! No, not YOU, Madison — the other Madison. No, the other, OTHER… oh, forget it.”
So, in the interest of our daughter’s future softball career, we named her Skylar.
The top boys names of 2009 were Matthew, Owen, Ethan, Jackson, Evan, Braden, Noah, Jack, and Zachary. The top girls names of 2009 were Madison, Emma, Hannah, Olivia, Audrey, Isabella, Grace, Taylor and my husband’s one-time fave, Emily.
For the decade, the top boy names were Jacob, Michael, Ethan, Christopher, Jack, Daniel, Aiden, William, Joshua and Ryder. For girls, the most popular names were Emma, Madison, Emily, Hannah, Olivia, Samantha, Ashley, Ava, Elizabeth and Madelyn.
Meanwhile, Candy remains a popular name with hookers and strippers, and Candace is a favorite among drag queens. Woo-hoo!

I’m confused now. Am I supposed to post comments here or in the forum? I commented in the forum but I’m not sure who reads that…
(Yes, it’s easy to confuse me. I haven’t slept a full night’s sleep in over 4 months either.)

More people read the comments here, I believe, because I haven’t really launched the forum yet. (It’s a work-in-progress.)
I accidentally checked the “forum” box when I posted this story; sorry for the confusion! Miss Skye has been waking up every two hours at night and my mind is absolute mush.
Love the new profile pic, Cowgirl!

Wow, it’s good to know that my husband and I are so original in our name-choosing. Our top names were Zachary, Owen and Ethan for a boy, and Sophia (which I can’t believe didn’t make the top 10 list b/c everyone I know in this area has a Sophia), Emma, Hannah and Olivia for a girl. In my “2 under 2″ moms group, there are 3 Zacharys and 4 Sophias out of 8 families. I’ve gotten used to using “my/your/her/their” as a modifier every time I reference a child.

I would have thought Sophia before Taylor. There are three Sophias in my older son’s preschool class. My son’s name is Ethan so we’re not very original either I guess.

We’re thinking Barkley for a boy [We're in East TN, so we cannot spell it Barclay, or he will forever be "Bar" (like where you go drankin') and "Clay" (like the red durt in the floorbawrd of yur truck).] We’re considering Delaney or Marisol for a girl. (My husband is warming to Marisol, but he LOOOOVES Buffett, so it will probably be Delaney). Hopefully neither name will climb the charts-Being named Jessica meant always having a nickname, or going by your last name, or seeing 12 heads swivel every time your name was called.
