Yay! It’s “Dress Like a Disabled Person Day,” Kids!

Australia may be among my favorite vacation spots — I could seriously live in Sydney and enjoy greeting everyone with “G’day, mate!” — but its education system may need some, um, fine-tuning…

An elementary school in South Australia has infuriated parents and disability advocates by asking students to come to school dressed as a disabled person as part of a fundraiser.  And the best disabled costumes get a prize!

The school’s newsletter stated: “There will be prizes for the best students dressed as a person with a disability. Get your thinking hats on and see what disability you can represent!”

Oh yes, THAT’S going to end well.

At least the goal was admirable:  to raise money for a clinic in Bangladesh that repairs children’s cleft lips and palates.  (Word of advice for administrators:  Just stick to more harmless fundraisers, such as pimping out dates with hot teachers.)

Sources say popular costume ideas included Ozzy Osbourne, Paris Hilton and Paula Abdul masks.

This is hilarious! Wow. I’m almost ashamed to be Australian after this one.

    Almost.
