Roanoke Should Be Nicknamed “The City of Wise Baby Mamas”
Sometimes, you just can’t make this stuff up:
Neither a prank nor an Onion article, this old-but-classic newspaper caption from Roanoke, Virginia encapsulates why government-mandated contraception-tinis may not be such a bad idea.
The Roanoke medical community is apparently as stellar as this woman’s maternal instincts, as evidenced by this quote from the article:
“As for smoking while pregnant, she said her doctor told her “it would be good if I cut back, but if I totally quit, it would not only cause stress on me but it would cause stress on the baby.”
Precisely why I maintained my heroin habit! Those withdrawal shakes would be hell on the baby.
Of course, my mom smoked the entire time she was pregnant with me. “Nobody told you not to back in those days,” she shrugged. And look at me — I’m fine!
Oh, wait, hold on a sec till this massive facial twitching fit passes. . . just one of those little “quirks” that I have.

It’s not a joke… I live in Chesapeake, VA, not too far from Roanoke, and there was a recap of this in a local paper.
